My name is Zayar and I am a graduate student in Materials Science and Engineering at Mahidol University. I come from a humble background, as my parents were government employees, so it has been a struggle for me to pursue my dreams of higher education. However, my strong work ethic, passion for learning, and dedication to making a positive impact on my community have driven me to overcome these challenges.
I have always had a deep interest in using science and technology to make a positive impact on my community. This passion led me to establish a youth-empowered Red Cross team in Myanmar. I have been working there for the past seven years to alleviate human suffering and develop safe and resilient communities through integrated community initiatives, promoting the knowledge of humanitarian values, disaster risk reduction, and first aid.
My experiences volunteering with the Myanmar Red Cross sparked my interest in combining my background in materials science with my passion for disaster management.
As an undergraduate student at the University of Technology (Yatanarpon Cyber City) in Myanmar, I studied Materials and Metallurgical Engineering. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in various projects, competitions, and internships that allowed me to gain valuable experience in both materials science and disaster management. I also had the opportunity to participate in field experiences at various mining and metallurgical companies, where I learned about the extraction of metals and other materials. Additionally, I had the opportunity to represent Myanmar as the head of the delegation at the 8th National Youth Gathering and International Youth Camp (Jumara2016) in Indonesia and participated in the 2018 GKS for ASEAN Countries Science & Engineering Students Program at Chosun University for five weeks where I learned about Korea’s technology, language, and culture.

As a graduate student at Mahidol University, I am currently researching the synthesis of silver nanoparticles using fungi, intending to use them in antimicrobial packaging materials to prolong disinfection and help counter future pandemics. My research aims to address a pressing need in my country, where infectious diseases continue to pose a significant threat to public health. The use of silver nanoparticles in packaging materials has the potential to provide an additional layer of protection against the spread of harmful pathogens. I am excited about the opportunity to continue my studies at Mahidol University, a highly reputable institution known for its cutting-edge research in materials science and engineering. The resources and facilities available at the university will provide me with the necessary tools to conduct my research effectively and achieve my goals.
Alongside my research, I am also working as a teaching assistant in the chemistry department, developing my skills in time management and effective communication of complex scientific concepts. Looking to the future, I hope to continue my studies and research in the field of Materials Science and Nanotechnology, with a focus on finding innovative solutions to the challenges faced by my country. I am deeply committed to making a positive impact on the lives of people in Myanmar, and I believe that my research and volunteer work will play a critical role in this effort. Furthermore, I believe that the networking opportunities and resources at Mahidol University will help me in achieving my goals. The university is well-known for its strong research programs in my field of study.
