Student Portrait

My name is Lyn. I was born and raised in Yangon, Myanmar. I come from a broken family and grew up with my younger sister. As a child, I often felt sadness due to my parents’ strained relationship. Despite the emotional and financial difficulties we faced, my mother, a nurse by profession, remained fiercely dedicated to our well-being and education. She worked tirelessly on a very low income to raise her two daughters, always encouraging us to follow our hearts. Her strength and resilience have made her my role model. Whenever I’ve felt insecure or overwhelmed, she has reminded me simply: “Do what your heart tells you.”

Throughout middle and high school, I consistently earned awards in sports, essay competitions, and national cultural and moral education events. My mother’s unwavering support helped me pursue all of these opportunities with confidence.

I have always been fascinated by the intersection of science, technology, and healthcare. My passion for biomedical engineering stems from personal experience. As a child, I often accompanied my mother while she worked at hospitals, community healthcare centers, and pharmacies. These early observations sparked a deep awareness of the importance of accessible, innovative healthcare solutions and ignited a desire to contribute to medical technology development.

During high school, I developed a strong interest in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biology. This curiosity led me to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering, where I built a solid foundation in programming, circuit analysis, and digital electronics. I excelled in technical programming and circuit design, and was honored to receive grants for project competitions and field report presentations.

Beyond academics, I joined the Badminton Team, the English Club, and the Student Association. These activities helped me grow into a sociable, engaged, and responsible member of the university community.

During my fourth academic year, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the closure of universities across Myanmar. I remained committed to learning through online courses, but found that online education alone could not meet my academic needs or satisfy my curiosity. This led me to consider continuing my studies abroad, where I could gain hands-on experience, access modern laboratories, and collaborate with experts.

I discovered the Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering program at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) in Thailand. The curriculum aligns perfectly with my interests and career goals, combining engineering with a focus on improving healthcare. During my first year at KMITL, my mother’s health worsened and she was forced to resign from her job, leaving me without any family financial support.

Despite these challenges, I remain deeply passionate about Biomedical Engineering. After graduation, I hope to return to Myanmar and contribute to the healthcare sector and the development of medical technologies for underserved communities—just as my mother once contributed to the lives of others, through compassion and dedication.
