Growing up in a low-income family, I have always had to work for everything I achieved. I have faced many struggles, and each experience has contributed to my growth and fueled my desire to chase my dreams. I often reflect on my journey and am reminded of the countless moments that have shaped who I am today.
My name is Derrick. I was born in Yangon, Myanmar, and I am a 23-year-old transgender individual. I was raised by a single mother after my parents divorced in 2006, shortly after she left for Singapore to work as a maid. I have a younger sister, and we lived with our grandparents and my aunt’s family. Since her departure, my mother has been the sole provider for our family, which is why I started working at the age of 17.
Though my educational journey has been complex, I have always strived to do my best. In 2018, I graduated from high school in the Ayeyarwady region. I then pursued distance learning in law at East Yangon University. I chose this major with the goal of advocating for women’s rights and fighting against violations toward them. At the same time, I pursued diplomas in networking and hardware while working at a mobile company to fund my education. Since my mother couldn’t afford the expenses, I paid for my studies myself—a proud achievement for a young boy.
In 2019, I volunteered with the Sit Nyein Pan Foundation, working on research projects related to computer networks. Later, I partnered with an experienced colleague to assist people with their computer issues at home. That same year, I left my job to seek new experiences and soon secured a position as a customer service representative at HOG and HOVA E-sports. Unfortunately, the company closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020, I ran a small online business with a friend and also worked as a freelance delivery person to support myself. During that time, I volunteered as a paid nurse aide at Medical Action Myanmar INGO during the third wave of COVID-19, working for four months. In 2023, I began taking free online programming classes. During this time, I collaborated with classmates to create small websites for projects. Since then, I’ve become determined to study computer science abroad to further improve my skills.
Although my mother couldn’t support me financially, I applied to scholarship programs in Thailand, including the Rangsit Scholarship, since 2022. I was fortunate to pass the first round but didn’t make it to the final. Finally, my mother decided to use her savings to support me for one year of study in Thailand. The responsibility for the remaining two years will fall on me. Currently, I am enrolled in my first year of Computer Science at Rangsit University.
I have also become actively involved in school activities, serving as a team leader at the International Language Center at Rangsit. Recently, I participated in Global Game Jam 2024 Thailand as a jammer, where I helped create a board game in just two days. In addition, I am actively involved in a non-profit organization as a host team leader and classroom manager. My main goal is to help produce high-quality students and enhance their education with the knowledge I have.
It is clear that technology is advancing rapidly, and it is essential for people to keep up. That’s why I have a dream to create an application called “Youth Tech” to support those interested in learning programming. The app will offer free lectures, and some advanced content will be available for a small fee. I will ensure that the app is easy to download and accessible for users to study in their spare time. I also plan to donate a portion of the profits from the paid content. Beyond that, I am committed to expanding my research and projects further, and I aim to push the boundaries of knowledge in my field.
With sincere effort, I believe my dream will come true. With your support and my determination, I am confident I can grow significantly. I promise, with all my heart, to dedicate myself fully to this goal. Through unwavering effort and meaningful contributions, I will make this vision a reality.
